Metrology (noun): The science of Measurement -
Merriam-Webster Dictionary
The mission of the IAFSM is to promote the development and use of precision measurement systems, techniques and software engaged in the generation of two or three-dimensional coordinate data for documentation, planning, analysis and presentation purposes in the service of justice.
So, what do
a skull found in a vacant lot
a state visit by the Prime Minister of Japan
and
a three million dollar warehouse fire,
all have in common?
Whether it is the Pathologist and Forensic Artist recreating the face of a homicide victim, the
Security Planner developing the most secure route for a motorcade or the Arson Investigator
calculating fuel loads, all rely on precise and accurate measurements.
New measuring systems produce higher degrees of precision and larger volumes of data quicker
than ever before, however this new technology also presents new challenges to forensic and
security specialists. How do you know if you are capturing the correct data? How can you avoid
becoming overwhelmed with extraneous information? What is the best way of presenting the data?
How do you respond if your data or conclusions are challenged in court?
The International Association of Forensic and Security Metrology (IAFSM) is a non-profit
professional association of users, service providers and manufacturers of precision metrological
systems whose common interest is to address these and related issues as new technologies become more commonplace. Our members come from a variety of forensic and security disciplines and are
involved in the development and use of precision instruments such as laser scanners (LiDAR), 3-D
printers, Total Stations, Reverse Engineering Systems, Photogrammetric Software, GIS, and handheld laser measuring devices.
As an association whose focus touches on the full spectrum of specialized forensic and security
applications; we actively encourage membership, representation and input from all related
disciplines. Whether for crime scene mapping, pre-event security planning, accident reconstruction,
bloodstain pattern analysis, pathology, arson investigation or any related activity, the goals of the
IAFSM are to:
• Act as a forum for the development and exchange of information, experience and best practices
• Through a consultative process, develop and maintain discipline-specific standards, conduct training sessions, and set examinations leading to certification from the Association
• Research, evaluate and report on relevant techniques and technological developments, ensuring that they conform to accepted scientific methods and satisfy both peer review and court scrutiny
• Encourage and facilitate communication among related professional associations, system
developers, law enforcement personnel and government agencies
